The group started in October 2011. We're planning a programme that is a mix of talks by members of the group, outside speakers and visits. Topics include "Working class houses in Victorian times", "Immigration in 19th century Chesterfield", "The Pentrich rebellion", "19th century crime", and "An Elizabethan ladies' wardrobe revealed". Visits planned include Chesterfield Ragged School, Bakewell Old House Museum, Kelham Island Museum and The Workhouse, Southwell.
Social History 2
We are a group who are interested and enthusiastic to learn more about Social History. Our indoor meetings are held at the Stonegravels Community Centre on the third Thursday of the month from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm, but during the summer months we do get out and about on visits. In 2017, we will be moving to room 2 in the Market Hall.
In 2016 our programme included visits to Kelham Island, Brodsworth Hall and a behind the scenes tour of Chesterfield Museum. Our meetings have also been focusing on the theme of model villages. In 2017 we will be focusing on the social history of education.
Our activities stimulate lots of conversation and shared memories, so if you are interested in how people lived in times past as well as times present come along and join us. Our 2017 programme is here.
